Early Years
Introduced in 1973, the Mitsubishi Lancer owes its name to mounted cavalry. However, the car itself charged into Europe and Asia prior to being available to American drivers. It went on to win World Rally Championships, race tracking, and hill-climbing competitions, which cemented its reputation as a vehicle that you could rely on for its exciting performance. Shortly before its debut in the United States, the Lancer Evolution found its place among motorists seeking an adventurous sedan with 4WD capabilities. Due to its appearance in both movies and video games, the model's popularity increased until it had a notable following when it arrived on the roads of the Northeast. Each successive iteration produced greater capability, as its design philosophy was aimed at granting it the momentum to overtake its competition.
Middle of the Road
Those who first got behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Lancer back in 2001 would have been able to activate its 2.0L engine, which provided energy to the car by creating 120 horsepower and 130 lb.-ft. of torque. This system was the first to be certified by the EPA as a low-pollution powertrain. Its Evolution iteration reached U.S. markets around 2003, with the vehicle being equipped with AWC capability to enhance grip on the roads. The next year, the Ralliart and Sportback LS models were added as well, which represented its growing popularity. With the last generation being the Evolution X, it gained renown for having one of the most advanced AWD systems at the time. However, the focus began to shift toward leg room, amenities, and creature comforts.
Final Versions
When 2015 arrived, the Lancer Evolution FE, which stands for ‘final edition’ was announced. It was a limited run with only 1,600 cars produced for American distribution. However, the baseline version was continued until 2017. At that point, crossovers and SUVs were more popular in the market, which led to the line being discontinued. The Mirage became the main Mitsubishi model for the compact sedan segment for trips down to places like the Watertown Golf Club.
